12 PASSENGERS AND 20 COWS DIE, 16 INJURED IN KOGI ROAD CRASH

No fewer than 12 people died and 16 others sustained varying degrees of injuries on Monday following a road crash at Irekpeni village, along the Lokoja-Abuja Highway.

A witness who identified himself simply as Tunji told journalists in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, that the accident occurred when a luxury bus with number plate KRD 799 LC, which was coming from Lagos and was heading to the North had a head-on collision with a truck with number plate KTN 711 YZ.

He added that the truck was loaded with many cows.

According to him, the driver of the luxury bus ran into a road block mounted by armed robbers along the road and attempted to avoid it.

He stated that in the driver’s attempt to avoid the road block, the bus had a head-on collision with the truck, leading to the immediate death of 12 passengers while 16 other victims were injured.

He said over 20 cows also died in the accidents.

According to him, the accident later caused a gridlock on the highway before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps made some rescue operation and cleared the obstruction.

The FRSC Kogi State Sector Commander, Mr. Charles Abochi, confirmed the accident to journalists.

He stated that a total of 73 passengers were involved in the accident.
