A community in Lagos State, Abule Taylor, in the Abule Egba area has expressed worry over continued devastation of its roads and drainage channels, among other infrastructural facilities as a result of an on-going construction of a flyover at the Abule Egba interjection of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Residents of the community also complained about the recklessness of motorists, especially commercial bus drivers, being diverted to the area due to the construction work on the flyover.

They said in a letter addressed to the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, that at least three of the inner roads in the community had been badly damaged since the project started.

The letter, written by the Abule Taylor (Olori) Community Development Association, and signed by five of its officials, including the Chairman, Alhaji A. K. Adio; the Vice-Chairman, Pastor Oluwasayo Oluwaniyi; and the Secretary, Angela Adetula-Osindehinde, read in part, “We wish to bring to your notice that vehicular movement has shifted to our streets as a result of the ongoing construction work on the flyover at the Abule Egba interjection. As a direct consequence, the fragile laterite roads, which we recently graded, have deteriorated and may soon be impassable to motorists and other road users.

“Our children are further exposed to the menace constituted by some reckless danfo drivers plying these roads currently.

“Recently, we lost a member of the community – who tried to assist an elderly woman cross the road – through the reckless driving of a danfo driver.”

According to the letter, the affected streets are Abiodun Aina, Obabunmi Thomas and Dada Olowu.

Apart from pleading for the rehabilitation of the damaged roads, said to be about 1.5 kilometres long, the group also urged the state government to deploy security and state traffic personnel in the area to control traffic and restore order.

It suggested that the traffic personnel could be stationed by the NNPC filling station at Abule Taylor bus stop, especially at the traffic peak periods.
