Job Description Fleet Manager

A Fleet Manager is exactly as it suggests, the manager of the transportation fleet. Fleet managers in logistics companies are responsible for selecting the right vehicles and maintaining them in good operating condition so that the company can meet its distribution objectives efficiently and cost-effectively.

They have considerable operational experience in logistics and vehicle maintenance, and use fleet management software to track and monitor the various aspects of fleet and driver operations.

 

SKILLS SET REQUIREMENT

– Complete and up-to-date knowledge of Federal and State transportation regulations. For instance, knowledge of FRSC’s regulations as espoused under Road Safety Registration for Tankers and tractor-Trailers (RSRTT) which is an extension of the Road Transport Safety Standardization Scheme (RTSSS) and that of Lagos as detailed out in the Lagos Road Traffic Law of 2012 are all so important.

– Ability to accurately calculate load arrival times and other performance parameters. Must have a working knowledge of computers and Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft Excel with a manifest readiness to learn company specific fleet management software quickly

– Ability to develop and maintain an accurate record-keeping system

– Prioritization: Understanding of what is the single most important task at any given moment. Ability to think on one’s feet and make decisions quickly

– Listening skills: Willing to listen to drivers, office personnel, management, state and federal regulators and their concerns.

– Handle emergencies: Ability to stay calm and take decisions quickly

– Differentiate driver issues, decipher problems versus complaints and proffer relevant solutions

– Effective communication which is the ability to speak professionally and remain calm under immense pressure

– A Fleet Manager will naturally be a graduate with probably a postgraduate degree and relevant professional body affiliation to boot.

 

POTENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

– Oversee assigned fleet’s operations and make direct reports to the Head of Operations/Department on fleet performance and other operational requirements

– Obtain and maintain truck licensing, registrations and permits

– Direct activities related to dispatching, routing, and tracking vehicles

– Plan, organize and manage the work of subordinate staff to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements.

– Direct investigations to verify and resolve customer or shipper complaints

– Obtain and maintain annual inspections by regulatory authorities or in line with contractual obligations from counter-parties

– Oversee proper use of fuel rations; maintain log and account for fuel and oil storage tanks

– Maintain daily inspections

– Maintain work orders

– Conduct local safety meetings

– Work closely with the Fleet Maintenance Manager to oversee and schedule fleet maintenance and repairs

– Opening of work orders

– Researching parts availability and costing

– Approve the issuance of purchase orders

– Make and advise recommendations to Human Resources Department, through the Head of Departments, on training, annual leave or off-days, scheduling, reprimanding, hiring, and termination of recalcitrant employees

– Oversee proper maintenance of parts and other consumables’ inventory

– Responsible for operations ground safety

– Develop, maintain and ensure adherence to disciplinary procedures and drivers’ orientation program

  1. That is interesting the amount of skills that you need to have to get a fleet job! I would agree that being able to stay calm in stressful situations, would be really good characteristic to have. That is good to know that you need to constantly be up to date on you licensing to have a fleet job! Thank you for sharing!

  2. I used to work in logistics a little bit. I think it would be awesome to be in charge of a fleet. I didn’t really think about doing that when I was working in logistics but it would be cool to do that.

    Design strategies to minimize the cost or time required to move goods,
