The Kogi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a truck driver with 1,126.9 kg of Indian hemp with a street value of N5m.

The truck driver, Ismaila Abdulahi, was arrested on Wednesday with the illicit drugs concealed in 100 bags.

The commander of the agency, Alhaji Idris Bello, who paraded the suspects yesterday said Abdullahi who claimed to be conveying 100 bags of the illicit drug from Uromi in Edo State to Kaduna for one Ibrahim, was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday near Kabba-Junction on Lokoja-Abuja highway.

The driver, according to Bello, attracted the attention of an NDLEA patrol team when he took a U-Turn on the highway in a bid to escape with the drugs having been tipped off by a Volkswagen Sharon space bus driver ahead of him.

The NDLEA commander said Abdullahi and his passenger later abandoned the vehicle and ran into the bush when they could no longer cope with the hot pursuit from the NDLEA operatives but he (the driver) was caught while the passenger escaped.

Speaking with journalists, the suspect (Abdullahi) said he had been doing business with Ibrahim for long but regretted that (Ibrahim) played a fast one on him this time around.

He added that Ibrahim promised to pay him N250,000 on the successful delivery of the “weeds” to its destination in Kaduna and gave him an advance payment of N20,000 for fuelling.

Also paraded was Saidu Mohammed Bello alias “Wazobia”, a drug seller at Koton-Karfe market, arrested with 9kg of cannabis on August 4.

He said he was into the cannabis business to raise money for his ambition to contest the governorship seat of Kogi State.
