The Oyo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps said it recorded 107 deaths in 137 road accidents within the first quarter of 2015.

The Sector Commander, Mr. Yusuf Salami, added that 688 persons sustained injuries within the period.

Salami, who spoke at the Half Year 2015 Strategy Review Section with Unit Commanders and Heads of Department in the state, also said 12,688 persons were arrested for 14,149 traffic offences.

He added that despite the huge figure, 26.7 per cent reduction of deaths was recorded during the period compared to that of last year.

He said, “With the statistics, the road crashes increased in the state, but the number of deaths reduced and this can be attributed to many factors from the vehicles to the drivers.”

Salami said, 6,413 traffic offenders had been educated through motor park rallies and consultations with stakeholders in the transport sector.

He said Oyo State now had 10 driver’s licence collection centres, which had led to an increase in the number of drivers that had collected their driving licences.
