Three persons were killed yesterday when a truck carrying a 40-feet container rammed into a commercial bus at Alakija, on Mile 2-Badagry Expressway, Lagos State around. 7.00a.m.

Two others were injured when the truck moving inward Badagry and marked KRD526XP crashed into a commercial bus marked EPE972XH with five occupants.

The collision made the container to fall on the bus, killing three persons on the spot while two others were seriously wounded. They were rushed to a nearby hospital by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

When The Guardian visited the spot, though rescue operation was ongoing, about five mini-buses, crushed motorcycles, and wares of petty traders littered the scene of the accident.

According to an eyewitness, Emeka, who claimed he was lucky not to have been crushed by the trailer, said: “The trailer experienced brake failure and his assistant was shouting but before people could leave the area, the truck crushed everything in sight.”

Emeka said about five people lost their lives while two other persons got severely injured, with one of them having his right leg completely severed. He said further that the casualty figure would have been much higher if yesterday had not been a public holiday.

“The spot is a major bus-stop to link different parts of the city, with passengers, motorcyclists, Keke NAPEP operators and Danfo buses all competing for space. On a normal day, the accident scene is usually rowdy and crowded, but we still thank God despite the loss that it happened on a public holiday.”

A member of the Red Cross, Nanso Akachukwu, who is the Lagos State Fundraising Advisor, said when they got to the scene, they were informed that the police had taken two corpses away.

Officials of the Nigeria Police, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Red Cross Society, and the Army were part of the rescue operation, who removed the trailer, obstructing free flow of traffic, from the road.
