The Lagos State Government on Friday commenced the recovery of right of way along the Alapere-Agboyi-Ketu axis in line with its policy of providing more infrastructure and easing vehicular traffic in the area.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says road users, especially members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria, must obey the state traffic laws or face the consequences. Ambode stated this on Saturday during the inauguration of the Ketu-Alapere slip road on Oluwakemi Street, Alapere, in the Kosofe Local Government Area.

About two months ago, the Lagos State Government in its bid to completely ease commuting time at major traffic trajectory within the city noted for gridlock commenced the reconstruction of the Alapere-Ketu end of the Oworonshoki-Ogudu-Old Toll Gate stretch of the expressway down from the 3rd Mainland Bridge. That project was scheduled for completion in 7months!

LOCALLY-ASSEMBLED VEHICLES TO GET SPEED LIMITERS

As part of efforts to reduce the rate of speed-related accidents in Nigeria, the National Automotive Development and Design Council has directed all vehicle manufacturing plants in the country to install the speed-limiting device in their vehicles.
A deadline for compliance on the installation of the device in all vehicles being imported into the country has also been given.

In a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, a member of the Presidential Taskforce on Customs Reform, Mr. Lucky Amiwero, has called on the Federal Government to review the policy, due to its negative impact on the economy.
He said, “The impact associated with the implementation of the auto policy is as follows: the diversion of cars carrying vessel to neighbouring West African ports as a result of high tariff on imported vehicles; and the reduction of the maritime workforce by 70 per cent, which affects mostly licensed customs agents, importers, dealers and Nigerians abroad.”

SAFETY TIPS! COPING WITH POTHOLES

Hitting potholes can throw your vehicle\'s front end out of alignment. If you feel your car \"pulling\" during driving, that\'s a clue that you could have a problem.

Check the tread on your tyres. Uneven tread wear can be a sign of misalignment. If you hit a severe pothole, have the vehicle\'s alignment and tyre balance checked.

When you hit a pothole you can damage your tyre and/or the metal wheel of your vehicle. Keeping your tyres properly inflated will help reduce damage from potholes and other road hazards.

The impact of potholes on tyres increases dramatically with speed and can cause hidden, internal damage that could lead to tyre failure weeks, or even months, later. It\'s best to avoid potholes entirely, but if that\'s not possible, don\'t brake during the pothole impact. Instead, apply brakes before hitting a pothole and release them just before impact. Braking during the impact sets up the tyre and wheel assembly for a \"solid hit\" against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage occurs when a tyre is rolling than when it is skidding over a hole during braking.
