No fewer than five passengers sustained injuries on Wednesday after a 20-foot container truck rammed into a commercial bus at the Anthony end of the Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the truck, with number plate, Lagos AGL 895 XE, had developed a fault which made its driver swerve off his lane around 9.40am.

He reportedly rammed into the 18-seater bus, with number plate, MUS 684 XC.

Some residents and sympathisers were said to have assisted in bringing out the victims from the vehicle.

The injured passengers were taken to the Gbagada General Hospital by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

One of the victims, who did not want to be identified, said the vehicle was heading for Lekki.

He said, “When we got to the Anthony end of the expressway, I suddenly heard a bang. I saw that the truck had rammed into us. Because the driver was close to it, he couldn’t do anything. I sat in the front beside the driver and I sustained injuries in my hand and head. The police and some rescue agencies helped us.”

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Michael Akindele, said the truck was at top speed when its propeller snapped.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who was passing by at the time, joined in the rescue operation.

He said, “It was gathered that the 20-foot container truck while at high speed developed a mechanical fault, and swerved to the next lane into a moving 18-passenger Toyota Hiace commercial bus.

“The timely intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, who stopped his convoy and assisted in activating emergency response, assisted the recovery operation.

“Although no life was lost, five people, consisting three females and two males, were injured.”

Akindele said the agency’s emergency response team towing truck removed the vehicles to restore free flow of traffic.

He urged motorists to always check the road worthiness of their vehicles before putting them on the road.
