The Lagos State Government has announced plans to dredge the waterways along 26 water routes within the state.
This disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Dayo Mobereola while delivering a paper title “Exploring Transportation beyond roads” at the Annual Lagos Traffic Radio Lecture Series in Alausa, Ikeja.
He said the project, which was meant to promote water transportation in the state, would also in line with the programme of the state government to ensure the integration of the various modes of transportation.
Mobereola said the strategic transport master plan conceived by the state government would address the various issues within the sector.
The Commissioner, while explaining the master plan said the aim was to develop a fully integrated mass rapid transit system to cover the activities within the megacity region.
The Commissioner lamented that about $7.5m was being lost daily to traffic congestion in the state, which he described as a colossal loss to the economy of Lagos State.
He noted that the concentration on the use of road and increasing presence of vehicles currently at 80 per 1,000 persons and projected to be 200 per 1000 within the next 20 years as well as the challenge of limited roads development explained the loss.
According to him, Lagos needs 450 bus routes 20,000 buses to service 10 million passenger trips daily.
He said six rail lines, one mono rail line 14 BRT routes, three cable car projects and over 20 water routes would be developed with the implementation strategies being traffic management, ensuring an efficient public transport and transport integration.
