90% OF AUTO CRASHES CAUSED BY FAKE PARTS — FRSC

About 90 per cent of accidents witnessed on the roads in the country are caused by fake vehicle parts fixed mostly by mechanics, the Federal Road Safety Corps has said.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Abuja, Mr. Sunday Oghenekaro, who was represented by the Superintendent Route Commander, Mr. Barnabas Asongo, said this in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, after inaugurating the new leadership of the Association of Auto Works and Technicians of Nigeria (AAWATON), FCT chapter.

Oghenekaro, therefore, appealed to vehicle mechanics to always stick to original auto parts in order to reduce road accidents.

While he lauded AAWATON in contributing to the nation’s development, the sector commander charged members of the association to cut corners while doing their work, saying the FRSC was ready to assist the organisation when necessary.

He said, “I’m hoping that this is an event that marks the beginning of better things to come. We believe that our organisation will partner with yours to keep our road safer.”

LOCALLY-ASSEMBLED VEHICLES TO GET SPEED LIMITERS

As part of efforts to reduce the rate of speed-related accidents in Nigeria, the National Automotive Development and Design Council has directed all vehicle manufacturing plants in the country to install the speed-limiting device in their vehicles.
A deadline for compliance on the installation of the device in all vehicles being imported into the country has also been given.

He said, “The impact associated with the implementation of the auto policy is as follows: the diversion of cars carrying vessel to neighbouring West African ports as a result of high tariff on imported vehicles; and the reduction of the maritime workforce by 70 per cent, which affects mostly licensed customs agents, importers, dealers and Nigerians abroad.”

Hitting potholes can throw your vehicle\'s front end out of alignment. If you feel your car \"pulling\" during driving, that\'s a clue that you could have a problem.

Check the tread on your tyres. Uneven tread wear can be a sign of misalignment. If you hit a severe pothole, have the vehicle\'s alignment and tyre balance checked.

When you hit a pothole you can damage your tyre and/or the metal wheel of your vehicle. Keeping your tyres properly inflated will help reduce damage from potholes and other road hazards.

The impact of potholes on tyres increases dramatically with speed and can cause hidden, internal damage that could lead to tyre failure weeks, or even months, later. It\'s best to avoid potholes entirely, but if that\'s not possible, don\'t brake during the pothole impact. Instead, apply brakes before hitting a pothole and release them just before impact. Braking during the impact sets up the tyre and wheel assembly for a \"solid hit\" against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage occurs when a tyre is rolling than when it is skidding over a hole during braking.
