Commercial drivers in Abia State have called on Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to stop the alleged illegal N1,000.00 driving test levy collected by the Board of Internal Revenue.
The aggrieved commercial drivers said the amount was usually taken from them while trying to renew their driver’s licence.
They insisted it was quite abnormal for a driver who had been renewing his/her driver’s licence for many years to pay for driving test whenever it was time to renew it.
One of them, who gave his name as Ikpo Agu, told Southern City News he was angry because it was quite belittling for people, who were not born when he went for his driving test and passed, to ask him to pay for driving test before his licence would be renewed.
Agu said that when he complained to an employee of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, the officer said, “Oga we are not to be blamed as the state Board of Internal Revenue gave the directive”.
Another driver, who identified himself only as Paul, expressed his disgust over the levy and asked the governor to address the problem before members of the BIR in the state caused unnecessary embarrassment to the current administration.
