Bajaj Auto, the world’s largest manufacturer of 3-wheelers, has announced plans to increase its assembly plant in Nigeria from one to at least three in the next two.
The Indian auto company also said in one year, it should have achieved 40 per cent local content in the assembly of its 3-wheeled vehicles in Nigeria.
The Managing Director, Metropolitan Motors, Mr. Toyin Okeowo, announced the plan in Abuja at the weekend during the launch of Bajaj Maxima Cargo utility 3-wheelers vehicles.
Mr. Okeowo said the vehicles are assembled in Nigeria and within in the next two years, we plan to have plants in three zones in Nigeria – the East, North and South adding that Bajaj should also achieve 40 per cent local content within the next one year.
The newly launched Baja Maxima Cargo he said is “the answer to a number of transportation challenges in Nigeria, most especially in rural areas and areas with bad road network.”
“It is affordable and the cheapest utility vehicle on Nigerian road with a carrying capacity of about one tone. It’s a three wheeler with a lot of difference; it’s very rugged, powerful and better suspension,” Okeowo said.
Senior Vice President, Africa, Bajaj Auto, Mr. K.S. Grihapathy, said, “Over the years, our passenger 3-wheeler has become a part of the social fabric in Nigeria. Apart from being an effective first and last mile transportation solution, it also provides employment to millions.”
