COMMERCIAL DRIVER ATTEMPTS SUICIDE TO EVADE ARREST (PICTURES)

There was tension in Government House roundabout, Owerri popularly known as Okigwe roundabout yesterday as a commercial driver tried taking his own life by lying under a moving car and begged to be run over.

According to an eye witness account, “the commercial bus driver, who had already been beaten blue and black, with bruises to the head for refusing to follow the traffic warders to their office at Shell Camp Police Station, decided to run under a moving vehicle pleading to be run over.”

The ugly incident drew the attention of road users and caused great traffic gridlock for more than 30mins before users appealed to him to come out and he was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station.

The round-about has become quite notorious as hot spot for police traffic warders who terrorize motorists at the aforementioned junction, not necessarily controlling traffic but looking for offenders to extort money from.

LOCALLY-ASSEMBLED VEHICLES TO GET SPEED LIMITERS

As part of efforts to reduce the rate of speed-related accidents in Nigeria, the National Automotive Development and Design Council has directed all vehicle manufacturing plants in the country to install the speed-limiting device in their vehicles.
A deadline for compliance on the installation of the device in all vehicles being imported into the country has also been given.

The impact of potholes on tyres increases dramatically with speed and can cause hidden, internal damage that could lead to tyre failure weeks, or even months, later. It\'s best to avoid potholes entirely, but if that\'s not possible, don\'t brake during the pothole impact. Instead, apply brakes before hitting a pothole and release them just before impact. Braking during the impact sets up the tyre and wheel assembly for a \"solid hit\" against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage occurs when a tyre is rolling than when it is skidding over a hole during braking.
