Our crew stumbled on this ‘disaster-waiting-to-happen’ on the Ojota ‘Odoalaro’ bridge linking Maryland, Lagos at about 1pm today! We broadcasted this live as it was happening on our facebook page. In one of the shots, the truck almost crashed into an A. A. Rano 60,000litres capacity tanker!
Every effort made by us to force the driver and motorboy to a stop with a view to getting them to do something about the fully loaded container that was almost falling off the latch was completely rebuffed.
Attempt to rally the other road users to support our effort was also totally ignored. Everybody was basically all about getting past the truck as fast as possible! Meanwhile, a little traffic was fast building up hence it was inevitable that other road users will ultimately be left with no other option than to maintain an unhealthy closeness to this dangerously looking vehicle.
We finally came across some LASTMA officials and put them on advance notice against the truck that was still several meters away.
But were we shocked at their response too! They were obviously too engrossed with some folks that violated the BRT lane to be concerned about ‘some’ improperly latched container!
Without mincing words, we in Haulage Report Now are of the considered opinion that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) may of necessity need to immediately speed up the implementation of its recently declared policy of impounding and prosecuting drivers and owners of poorly latched and falling trucks! We really don’t have to wait until yet another fatal disaster before we start doing what needs to be done! A stitch in time, they say, saves nine!
