A warehouse belonging to an Asian firm, Canco, which is situated within the Eleganza Plaza, Orile, Lagos, was on Monday sealed by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria following a raid that led to the discovery of more than N2bn worth of substandard motor parts.
The substandard motor parts discovered in the company’s warehouse included tires, tubes, motor oil, break and gear parts, among others.
According to the Director, Inspectorate and Compliance Directorate, SON, Mr. Bede Obayi, the substandard vehicle parts were brought in by one Ade Ori Nigeria Limited of 118 Willoughby Street, Ebute Meta, Lagos, who made 82 shipments containing 194 containers to Nigeria between July 30, 2014 and June 25, 2015.
While leading police officers and the SON enforcement team to the warehouse, Obayi said the company was not registered with the organisation and did not have the SON Conformity Assessment Programme certification that ensured that goods coming into the country were properly checked and verified by the agency’s overseas partners to be of authentic quality.
“These are Chinese and Indian people doing massive adulteration on Nigerian soil. It is because of them that accidents happen every day on our roads with burst tires and bad motor oil,” he said.
According to him, the company is repackaging expired tires and tubes, which are being sold as seven-year-old and putting the names of brands that have been registered with SON on them as well as writing “Made in China” on the products.
