FIVE DIE IN KOGI AUTO CRASH

Five persons were confirmed dead in a ghastly motor accident along the Lokoja-Ajaokuta Road in Kogi State on Thursday.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, who confirmed the accident, said the victims — three men and two women — died on the accident spot at Gidan Bassa village.

The state Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Ogochukwu Ugboma, in a statement said the accident involved three vehicles – a truck belonging to Dangote Cement Company with registration number Kano GWU 34 XA, a Hilux pick-up van with registration number CT 29 B02 and an Audi TE model with registration number Lagos 418 AAA.

He said seven people were involved in the accident, but two escaped without any injury.

Ugboma said the accident could have been as a result of careless overtaking, but said full investigations had commenced to ascertain its remote and immediate cause.

He said the victims’ corpses had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

It\'s best to avoid potholes entirely, but if that\'s not possible, don\'t brake during the pothole impact. Instead, apply brakes before hitting a pothole and release them just before impact. Braking during the impact sets up the tyre and wheel assembly for a \"solid hit\" against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage occurs when a tyre is rolling than when it is skidding over a hole during braking.
