FRSC COMMISSIONS 283 NEW PATROL CARS, AMBULANCES AND TOW TRUCKS

In its renewed determination to create a safer motoring environment across the country, the Federal Road Safety Corps today formally unveiled 283 vehicles comprising operational vehicles, ambulances and a heavy duty tow truck at the Peace Park, International Conference Centre in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The formal commissioning which had in attendance the Honourable Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazzau representing His Excellency President Muhamadu Buhari, GCFR is in partial fulfilment of the Corps’ drive to achieve the 2016 corporate strategic goals which seeks to reduce road traffic crashes by 15% and fatalities by 25%.

The FRSC Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi stated that the occasion “symbolise the sustained intent of the Federal Government to raise the bar on Road Safety Management and collective dedication to the task of exploring innovative and resourceful ways of funding the road safety intervention in the road sector.

“The patrol vehicles and ambulances will be distributed along major corridors as part of measures to enhance road safety management and increase safety enforcement strategies”.

He also said that “Our determination in this regard cannot and will not in the least be compromised because the lives of our citizens, using these roads is vital to our socio-economic renewal and indeed national transformation”.

Furthermore, Oyeyemi said: “in its resolve to address the menace of road traffic crashes, the Corps applies series of integrated measures including crash prevention, enforcement, awareness raising and post-crash medical care to create meaningful measurable improvement along major corridors of the nation’s highways”.

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Executive Council for remaining steadfast in its declaration to ensure safer road use in the country through improved funding of road safety-related matters.

LOCALLY-ASSEMBLED VEHICLES TO GET SPEED LIMITERS

As part of efforts to reduce the rate of speed-related accidents in Nigeria, the National Automotive Development and Design Council has directed all vehicle manufacturing plants in the country to install the speed-limiting device in their vehicles.
A deadline for compliance on the installation of the device in all vehicles being imported into the country has also been given.

In a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, a member of the Presidential Taskforce on Customs Reform, Mr. Lucky Amiwero, has called on the Federal Government to review the policy, due to its negative impact on the economy.
He said, “The impact associated with the implementation of the auto policy is as follows: the diversion of cars carrying vessel to neighbouring West African ports as a result of high tariff on imported vehicles; and the reduction of the maritime workforce by 70 per cent, which affects mostly licensed customs agents, importers, dealers and Nigerians abroad.”

SAFETY TIPS! COPING WITH POTHOLES

Hitting potholes can throw your vehicle\'s front end out of alignment. If you feel your car \"pulling\" during driving, that\'s a clue that you could have a problem.

Check the tread on your tyres. Uneven tread wear can be a sign of misalignment. If you hit a severe pothole, have the vehicle\'s alignment and tyre balance checked.

When you hit a pothole you can damage your tyre and/or the metal wheel of your vehicle. Keeping your tyres properly inflated will help reduce damage from potholes and other road hazards.

The impact of potholes on tyres increases dramatically with speed and can cause hidden, internal damage that could lead to tyre failure weeks, or even months, later. It\'s best to avoid potholes entirely, but if that\'s not possible, don\'t brake during the pothole impact. Instead, apply brakes before hitting a pothole and release them just before impact. Braking during the impact sets up the tyre and wheel assembly for a \"solid hit\" against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage occurs when a tyre is rolling than when it is skidding over a hole during braking.
