At the early hours of today, a 33,000 litres capacity fuel tanker approaching the Murtala Muhammed International Airport toll gate from the Sahara Energy tank farm end, crashed and spilled its content on the road.
Eyewitness account attributed the accident to the excessive speed at which the driver approached the turning leading to the International Airport Toll Gate. The tanker driver was however brought out unconscious and immediately taken to the hospital.
A traffic gridlock developed thereafter and a quick diversion was put in place. The quick response of the Airport Fire Station and other emergency response personnel prevented the situation from degenerating further.
Transporters also capitalized on the incident to increase their fare by as much as 100%!
