A commercial motorcyclist died on Tuesday in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan after he fell into the path of a fast moving truck. He was said to be carrying a female passenger who escaped death.
His death led to a protest by his colleagues, while his remains was deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital morgue, Yemetu, Ibadan.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim, simply identified as Kehinde, was said to have met his untimely death after being put under pressure by a taxi driver that was trying to escape being arrested by some Vehicle Inspection Officers.
His head was severed in the accident, while parts of his body were shredded by the impact of the crash. It was learnt that the deceased was due to get his newly born child christened on Wednesday.
According to an eyewitness account, the VIO were trying to collect their normal revenue of N2,500.00 from the Taxi cabs, but the driver felt reluctant to give them and in a desperate attempt to evade payment ran into the Okada thereby pushing the rider into the on-coming trailer. The VIO officers normally lay siege on taxi cabs and motorcycles that are yet to pay the levy of N2,500.00.
The female passenger on the bike was able to jump off the bike before the crash occurred. She however sustained minor injuries. A source added that the VIO officials fled the scene of the accident immediately.
Fellow riders who were at the scene were the ones who identified his corpse.
Shortly after the incident, his angry colleagues stormed the Ikolaba office of the VIO at Idi-Ape, broke some windows, louvres and bottles of soft drinks but were prevented from gaining entry by the police.
Efforts to reach the Chief VIO, Michael Ajibola, proved abortive. He was said to be holding a meeting on the development.
