The City of Akure, Ondo State was practically grounded to a halt on Thursday when the motorcycle riders popularly known as Okada took to the street in protest of the sharp unilateral increase of the cost of acquiring commercial number plates by the State Authorities.
The State Government had imposed a cost of N6000.00 for commercial number plates and insisted that anyone who defaults will have their Okada seized and made to face the full wrath of the law. A Task Force had been constituted to ensure full compliance.
In defiance, the protesting riders took the protest to the front of the Governor’s Office. It is not yet known how the State Government will respond to this crisis.
It must be stated however that commercial motorcycles represent a popular and formidable means of transportation in the State.
