One hundred and fifty-nine traffic offenders in Lagos State have been convicted by the state mobile courts in the last seven days.
Our correspondent learnt that 115 of the convicts were private car owners, while 30 were commercial drivers. Also, 10 tricycle owners and four motorcycle owners were among those convicted.
They were convicted for plying restricted routes and causing obstruction on major highways in the state.
The Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, Adebayo Taofiq, on Monday said the convicts were arrested in the Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Ikorodu Road, Fagbaa and Pen-Cinema areas of the state.
He said, “While some of the convicts were made to pay fines, others had their vehicles impounded by the agency as directed by the mobile courts.”
Taofiq said the courts were presided over by five magistrates.
He added that the state government had also donated security vehicles and motorcycles to the agency to boost its operations.
“The Chairman of the task force, SP Saheed Egbeyemi, who received the vehicles, said 189 hoodlums were also charged to court in the last five days by the agency, promising to do more with the vehicles,” Taofiq added.
