The Lagos State Driver’s Institute on Thursday described most drivers in the state, especially “commercial drivers”, as terrorists.
The Chief Executive Officer, LASDRI, Mr. Philip Ogunlade, explained that many drivers in the state were on the roads to threaten the lives of other road users.
Ogunlade, who spoke during a sensitisation workshop for drivers at Iyana-Ipaja, added that drivers, especially danfo drivers, who drove against the traffic, were terrorists.
He said, “Any driver who drives recklessly is a terrorist. Any driver who drives against the traffic is a terrorist and it is common among drivers of yellow buses in Lagos.”
He stated that to check the excesses of drivers on the road, the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, had directed the institute to ensure decent conduct of commercial drivers and conductors.
He said professional drivers needed to undergo training in the institute once in a year.
The State Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer, Gbolahan Toriola, who was represented by the Head of Operation 2, Adebayo Olusoji, warned drivers to be safety conscious always in order not to endanger their lives, their passengers and other road users’ lives.
Speaking on the theme of the workshop titled, ‘Life is worth living, drive safely’, Toriola advised drivers to always comply with the road safety laws, saying Vehicle Inspection Officers were on roads for drivers’ safety.
“When you comply with the laws, we are happy. We gain nothing from arresting or booking you, nobody will penalise us for not arresting you. Vehicle Inspection Service is not your enemy so also are the officers. Alcohol and drug consumption should be totally discouraged among our drivers; life is worth living.”
The Head of LASDRI, Ikeja Centre, Oloriegbe Dennis, said, “Our job is to train and ensure that you obey traffic laws.”
