Some pedestrians on Monday expressed delight at the pace of the ongoing construction of the pedestrian bridge in the Berger axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of the Lagos State had approved the construction of the bridge following several complaints by users of the road. The pedestrians said in Lagos that the bridge would reduce the rate of accidents and vehicular traffic slow-down that usually occur in the area.

Chioma Julius, a nursing mother, said the completion of the bridge would reduce the burden of crossing the road.

“Most times, I prefer to stay at home because of my children; crossing the road is not easy with little ones, but today, I do not have an option. I am very sure that mothers who have children like me, who also do not have cars, will be happy with the construction; Ambode has proven himself,” Julius said.

She said that anyone who tried to cross the expressway after the completion of the bridge should be made face severe punishment.

“We have been demanding for a pedestrian bridge and we will have one very soon at Berger. So, if anyone is caught crossing the expressway after its completion, such a person should face the consequences,” she said.

Sherifat Momodu, a resident of Ojodu Abiodun, also commended the state government for responding to the plight of residents, noting that a lot of accidents had occurred on the route.

“I cannot recall how many accidents have occurred on this route and we have been appealing to government for a long time without response. This administration has done us a great favour; some of us have to board buses going to Akute area of Ogun from Ketu to avoid crossing the expressway.

“With this bridge, we will not need to board Akute bus anymore. I for one know that I will board Berger bus and use the pedestrian bridge,” she said.

Matthias Essien, who resides at Arepo, Ogun, along the expressway, appealed to the Federal Government to replicate the pedestrian bridge at Arepo.

“The government should replicate what Lagos State Government is doing in Berger. This will stop the knocking down of pedestrians crossing the expressway at Arepo. Many people have been hit by speeding cars at Arepo bus-stop because there is no footbridge,” he said.

According to Essien, the population of residents at Arepo has increased in the last four years and such a bridge is needed in the area.
