The Lagos State Public Works Corporation has announced the commencement of reconstruction of roads, including Odunlade and Fadipe streets, in Shomolu Local Government Area of the state.
The corporation said the project would bring respite to residents of the areas, which are prone to flooding whenever it rains.
The Chief Executive Officer, LSPWC, Mr. Ayotunde Sodeinde, during an inspection to the project sites, disclosed that the projects became necessary when Governor Akinwunmi Ambode discovered the poor state of the roads during a routine inspection of ongoing projects in the state.
According to Sodeinde, the governor had expressed displeasure at the poor state of the roads in Shomolu, which prompted his directive for reconstruction.
He said, “Before now, these roads were impassable and there were no drainages. When we moved in, we reconstructed the drainage to discharge from Odunlade Street through Fadipe into a collectable drainage so as to address the problem of flooding.
“The road, measuring about 483 metres, is presently undergoing base preparation after which asphalting will commence in the next few days if the weather is favourable.”
Sodeinde said the poor sanitation in the area was due to indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the drains, which in turn created blockade and incessant flooding during the raining season.
He stated that the Ministry of the Environment and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority had held a meeting with the Community Development Associations on how to improve sanitation in communities around the area.
The Secretary, Ajosegbemi CDA, Mr. Kehinde Ajayi, said the state of the roads before the government’s intervention was pathetic.
He added that the project would bring succour to the residents of the community.
Sodeinde also visited some sections of the lkorodu-Sagamu road, where rehabilitation with crushed stones and asphalt is ongoing.
He said the corporation was ready to contain the rainy season with the rehabilitation of various roads going on across the state.
“Our jet patchers are all over the local government areas fixing all the pot-holes. Some are presently working at Ifako-Ijaiye and even along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway simply to ensure that our roads are free of pot-holes during the heavy rains,” he said.
