NURTW MEMBER IN FREE-FOR-ALL, 15 INJURED

There was pandemonium in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday, following the clash that ensued between two factions of the Ondo State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.

No fewer than 15 persons were reportedly injured in the bloody clash.

It was gathered that the clash, which started around 8.30pm and lasted for several hours, occurred because the factions were laying claim to the leadership of a unit of the NURTW.

According to a source, some members of the union in the state organised a rally to prepare for Thursday’s inauguration of the new Chairman of the NURTW in the state, Mr. Jacob Adebo.

The source said, “Trouble started when some members of the union from Ifelodun unit (Akure) were returning from the rally and some members of another group attacked them.

“This led to a clash between the two groups. At least 15 people have been taken to hospitals.”

The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the clash, adding that nobody had been arrested for the incident.

He said, “We have commenced investigation. We will ensure that the hoodlums are brought to book.”
