The Ogun State Police Command on Sunday arrested four truck hijackers in the Ijebu area of the state, and recovered the truck and the goods inside intact.
The suspects had reportedly hijacked a truck with number plate, EPE 72 XJ, loaded with new tyres, in Lagos and were travelling to the eastern part of the country, before they were intercepted by police operatives attached to the Ogbere division.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command had intensified patrol on highways in the state because intelligence reports indicated that some criminals now hijacked tankers and trailers loaded with petroleum products and goods.
He said, “The strategy paid off on Sunday, February 21, when the policemen attached to the Ogbere division intercepted a truck on Gbamugbamu Road, off the Lagos-Benin Expressway, Ijebu Ode.
“The truck was loaded with brand new tyres with four men who could not give any satisfactory explanation on the ownership of the tyres.
“The suspects were subjected to interrogation and they confessed that the truck, with its contents, was hijacked in Lagos State, and they were heading for the East.”
He said the four suspects were John Egwugwu, Bello Ibrahim, Monday Iroanya and Chinoso Nwakire.
He said the suspects would be transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Eleweran, Abeokuta for further investigation.
He said, “The Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, has directed that all Divisional Police Officers and heads of various operational teams in the state must make sure they curtail activities of criminals, particularly truck hijackers.
“The CP also assured the people of the state and those in transit within the state of adequate security of lives and property.”
It will be recalled that the command had on Friday recovered a petrol tanker hijacked by thieves in the state in Okada, Edo State.
Two suspects were arrested with the receiver of the stolen 33,000 litres of petrol.
They were arrested by police operatives attached to the Iperu division of the command.
Adejobi said the suspects, who operated in a Sport Utility Vehicle, used the vehicle to block the driver of the truck before they hijacked the truck with its content.
He said, “The police operatives swung into action immediately the report was made at the Iperu Police Division and traced the truck to Okada, Edo State, where it was recovered with the product.”
