One person has been confirmed dead after a fatal road accident involving medical students of the Abia State University, Uturu, along the Isiala Ngwa end of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
It was gathered that 12 others who sustained varying degrees of injury were receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.
It was learnt that the students were returning from the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, where they had gone to collect their academic gowns for induction as medical doctors, scheduled for Thursday (today) at the university main campus, Uturu.
It was gathered that one of the students, who came to Aba in his bus, had offered a free ride to his colleagues, who were returning to Umuahia after collecting the gowns.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the bus was trying to overtake a trailer on the expressway when the accident occurred, leaving one of the students dead.
The Head, Media and Publicity, ABSU, Mr. Acho Elena, who confirmed the incident, described it as sad.
He said, “The victims of the road accident were medical students of the Abia State University.”
