The Niger State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday disclosed that seven of its staffs have been incapacitated by speeding drivers in the state.
According to the state Commander, Susan Ajenge, this staffs were killed on the highway while trying to enforce road safety regulations adding that they were run down by speeding drivers.
Speaking to members of the Niger state House of Assembly in Minna, Ajenge said that over 35 staff members have been killed on the highway across Nigeria in the past one year.
She cited a case of one of the staff who is currently lying critically in the hospital as was recently run down by a driver while trying to clear obstruction adding that the staff have gone through two operations and may have the possibility of losing his manhood.
The Corps Commander who was responding to the Legislators allegations that members of the Corps harass and intimidate members of the public in the bid to generate revenue said that her staff face greater threats and need to be protected.
She appealed to the people in the state to cooperate with FRSC to ensure safer roads adding that by doing their job, the corps have helped in reducing road accidents by 35 per cent, “we have come to serve you and not to destroy the state. We are serving you by doing our job.”
The Niger state House of Assembly had summoned the FRSC Corps Commander on the allegation that the Corps in Niger state have been indiscriminately performing their functions on any road causing unnecessary and unwarranted tension amongst motorists.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Honorable Ahmed Marafa said FRSC in Niger state need re-orientation urging them to desist from intimidating, harassing and embarrassing motorists in township roads.
He called on the Corps members to make themselves more relevant on the highways than harassing motorists in the township roads.
