TRAILER CRUSHES SUSPECTED POLICE ESCORT IN CROSS RIVER

An unidentified person suspected to be a police escort was on Friday crushed to death by a trailer that skidded off the road in Ugep, headquarters of Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident, which happened at about 8pm close to the Eckankar Temple along the busy Calabar-Ikom Expressway, was said to have happened after the driver of the trailer, with registration number FUN 69 XA, lost control and veered off the road.

An eyewitness told Southern City News on Sunday that the Calabar-bound trailer from the northern part of the country was loaded with goats.

It was learnt that the victim was escorting the trailer to its destination. Though crushed, a witness said the all-black dress of the victim made him look like a police officer.

But the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Ikechukwu Igwe, said that information he got from the unit commander indicated that the dead victim was not a policeman.

Less severe damage occurs when a tyre is rolling than when it is skidding over a hole during braking.
