TRANSPORT MINISTRY MULL PLANS ON TRUCKS PARKS

The Federal Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) and Kings Communications Limited have concluded plans for a two-day national summit on establishment, management and operations of Transit Truck Parks, TTPs, in Nigeria.

The move to establish these parks is to enhance trade and investment with view to reviving the nation’s economy.

The summit, scheduled for Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th, July 2017, has the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, as the Chief Host.

Amaechi will deliver the welcome address while the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, will deliver the keynote address.

The summit with theme ‘Truck Transit Parks: Providing Critical Infrastructure for Trade and Transit in Nigeria’, seeks to assemble stakeholders in transport and logistics sector to optimize the potentials and investment opportunities in TTPs and harmonize and standardize truck parking facilities on Nigerian roads.

According to the spokesman for the NSC, Mr. Ignatius Nweke, among those expected to attend the summit are some of the critical stakeholders in the project, which include state governors and transport commissioners, haulage truck owners, transport unions, construction companies, relevant National Assembly committees, prospective investors and leaders of thought in the sector.

LOCALLY-ASSEMBLED VEHICLES TO GET SPEED LIMITERS

As part of efforts to reduce the rate of speed-related accidents in Nigeria, the National Automotive Development and Design Council has directed all vehicle manufacturing plants in the country to install the speed-limiting device in their vehicles.

He said, “The impact associated with the implementation of the auto policy is as follows: the diversion of cars carrying vessel to neighbouring West African ports as a result of high tariff on imported vehicles; and the reduction of the maritime workforce by 70 per cent, which affects mostly licensed customs agents, importers, dealers and Nigerians abroad.”

SAFETY TIPS! COPING WITH POTHOLES

Hitting potholes can throw your vehicle\'s front end out of alignment. If you feel your car \"pulling\" during driving, that\'s a clue that you could have a problem.

Check the tread on your tyres. Uneven tread wear can be a sign of misalignment. If you hit a severe pothole, have the vehicle\'s alignment and tyre balance checked.

When you hit a pothole you can damage your tyre and/or the metal wheel of your vehicle. Keeping your tyres properly inflated will help reduce damage from potholes and other road hazards.

The impact of potholes on tyres increases dramatically with speed and can cause hidden, internal damage that could lead to tyre failure weeks, or even months, later. It\'s best to avoid potholes entirely, but if that\'s not possible, don\'t brake during the pothole impact. Instead, apply brakes before hitting a pothole and release them just before impact. Braking during the impact sets up the tyre and wheel assembly for a \"solid hit\" against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage occurs when a tyre is rolling than when it is skidding over a hole during braking.
