No fewer than nine persons were crushed to death on Thursday night when a sand-laden truck crashed into a mini-bus at Gora village in Nasarawa State.
Four other surviving victims of the accident have been hospitalised.
Some eye witnesses blamed the incident on the truck’s brake failure.
The police on Friday confirmed the death of nine persons in the reported accident involving tipper truck and a Sharon vehicle at Gora village in Karshi, Karu local government area of the state.
The state Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), ASP Ismaila Umar-Numan, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Karshi that four other victims have been hospitalised.
Umar-Numan, who described the accident as shocking, said the tipper loaded with sharp sand rammed into the Sharon vehicle.
He said: “We received information on June 26, 2015, that nine people died while four others were hospitalised as a result of ghastly accident as tipper loaded with sharp sand rammed into a Sharon vehicle along Gora village in Karshi, Karu local government area of the state.’’
According to him, residents of Gora village had since Thursday night being mourning the death of the victims.
“The police have since released the corpse of the deceased to the affected families for burial, while four others have been rushed to various hospitals in the area for treatments,” he said.
The spokesman prayed God to grant the affected families the fortitude to bear the loss.
