Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says his administration is committed to restoring the glory of the Apapa area, adding that ongoing works in the area will permanently solve the traffic congestion created by port activities.

Ambode spoke on Wednesday at the Lagos House, Ikeja, during a visit of the management team of the Nigeria Ports Authority, led by its Managing Director, Hadiza Usman.

The Governor, who said he was desirous of transforming the Apapa area into a beauty to behold, expressed confidence in the ability of the new NPA management to make a positive difference.

Ambode said he was satisfied that the agency was being led at a time of economic turbulence by a thoroughbred professional, who was equally grounded in the political terrain.

He said Lagos, being the commercial nerve centre and a city surrounded by water, deserved more than one port.

He said, “We have had issues about movement of cargoes and other vehicular movements that cause traffic congestion in the Apapa area; I think with the new management in charge of NPA, a whole lot of things will be resolved quickly. We will support everything to make Apapa a beautiful place.”

He commended the NPA for investing in the Lekki Deep Sea Port project, saying there was no doubt that the partnership would go a long way in driving more investment into Lagos.

Usman said the new team at the NPA wanted to expand the existing relationship between the agency and the Lagos State Government for the benefit of the people.

“There are several partnerships that currently exist and we intend to forge ahead with them. We have the Lekki Deep Sea Port development which both the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the NPA, have shareholdings. We believe that it is a project which we need to take forward within the shortest period,” Usman said.
