SON SEIZES 2000 USED TYRES IN IBADAN

SON Seize Tyres

The Oyo State office of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria says it has seized about 2000 used imported tyres from traders in Ibadan.

The seizure was made during one of the major operations designed to check the importation of used tyres popularly referred to as Tokunbo tyres into the country, the organisation said.

The SON Coordinator, Oyo state, Mr. Dele Ayeni, said the seizure was made in Mokola, Sango, Orogun and Ojoo areas of Ibadan.

He noted that the SON had issued several warnings to traders on the danger of selling such items, which he said had contributed to fatal accidents on Nigerian roads.

According to him, Nigeria loses N2bn annually to the smuggling of used tyres into the country.

“We have warned the marketers against selling substandard and used imported tyres but despite the warning and sensitisation programme, these traders persisted. SON is not after any individual trader; our major concern is to get rid of any substandard product in Nigeria,” Ayeni said.

“People are still importing and trading in substandard tyres thereby risking the lives of Nigerians. Nigerian government will not allow anyone to commit suicide or allow someone to kill another person. Substandard tyres have killed many Nigerians and we must guard against that. A few days ago, we lost six doctors from Ekiti State just because of tyre burst. There are thousands of such accidents that are not reported” he added.
