A driver, Sikiru Shittu, 40, who allegedly absconded with 13 kegs of 25 litres of groundnut oil valued at N202,000.00 was, on Wednesday, arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, who resides at Adealu area, Agege, Lagos, was arraigned before Magistrate I.O. Raji, on a charge of stealing.

Shittu, however, denied the charge and was admitted to N50,000.00 bail with two sureties in like sum.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused committed the offence on March 17 at Abule-Egba, Lagos.

He said that the accused stole 13 kegs of 25 litres of groundnut oil valued at N202, 000.00, property of Mrs. Rashida Adeniji.

Nwosu said that the complainant contracted the accused, a taxi driver, to help her deliver 13 kegs of groundnut oil to her shop.

“The complainant gave the accused her goods to drop in her shop and paid him the transport fare for the delivery of the goods. The accused absconded with the groundnut oil to unknown destination and subsequently did not show up at the Taxi park where he usually picked passengers,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the complainant later sighted the accused at another park and she informed the police who arrested him.

According to him, the offence committed contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused may be jailed for three years if found guilty of stealing as provided in section 287.

The case was adjourned until April 24 for mention.
