The Kaduna Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed the death of three persons and declared 14 others missing after an 18-seater bus plunged into River Rijana on Kaduna-Abuja Road.

The sector’s Head of Operations, Mr. Salisus Galadunci, said the accident occurred around 11pm on Tuesday.

Galadunci told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Kaduna that the 18 persons, who were members of the same family, were returning to Lokoja, Kogi State, from Kano State when the accident occurred.

He said one person survived the accident, adding that three corpses were recovered from the river.

He said, “An 18-seater bus travelling to Lokoja from Kano plunged into River Rijana with about 18 persons, all relatives, returning from the Sallah break.

“The incident was reported by the only survivor, a woman, who told operatives in an FRSC ambulance stationed at Doka, along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, around 7am on Wednesday.

“Rescuers from the FRSC Doka, Katari and Kakau were immediately dispatched to the place with ambulances.

“With the support of local divers, they searched for survivors.

“Eventually, three bodies were recovered, while the remaining 14 persons could not be found, including the survivor’s daughter.”

The FRSC boss said the recovered bodies had been buried by the riverside by villagers, as efforts continued to finding the missing persons.

“Among the FRSC rescue team are the Zone 1 Commander, Bulus Darwang; Kaduan State Sector Commander, Francis Udoma; and Zone 1 Head of Operations, Yomi Asaniyan,” Galadunci added.
